Biographical Note

Lucretia Hanson Little (1908-1977) was a Mill Valley, CA native, and attended Summit School and Tamalpais Union High School (now Tamalpais High School). She attended Marin Junior College (now the College of Marin), and later Northwestern University where she met and married Robert Little. They had a child, Robert Little, Jr., but by 1950 her husband had died and Lucretia and her son returned to Mill Valley. She worked as the Mill Valley Deputy City Clerk 1951-1973. She often collected maps, objects, and paper materials City Hall felt were redundant, but she saw their historical value.

Under her position as City Historian, she conducted research on the history of California, particularly Mill Valley and Marin County. She did extensive research on the Mexican land grants and early settlers in Marin County, San Rafael Archangel Mission, and Olompali State Historical Park. The Mill Valley Public Library opened a local history room dedicated to her on June 5, 1977. Lucretia’s collection formed the bulk of the History Room’s materials when it opened. She passed away after a long illness shortly after.
